Youth World Show Qualifying Requirement Removed for 2014

APHA recently announced the elimination of Youth World Show qualification requirements, effective immediately for the 2014 competition. The change is a result of discussion among leadership committees and member input since the rule was imposed two years ago. With the qualification requirements lifted, APHA anticipates growth in the show's entry numbers.

The rule only applies to the Youth World Championship Show; qualification through participation is still required to compete at the Open/Amateur World Championship Show. Click here to learn more about the rule change and qualification requirements.

Attention Owners of Double-Registered Racehorses

Before tattooing a double–registered horse, owners should make sure the APHA and the American Quarter Horse Association registered names are the same. It is much easier to make a name correction prior to tattooing than after. For more information, contact APHA Director of Racing Karen Utecht at (817) 222–6444 or by email at kutecht@apha.com.

Walter Bay Dies at Age 75

Racing owner and breeder Walter Bay died of cancer June 6. He was 75 years old. Born August 27, 1937, Walter was a resident and native of Clare, Michigan. He married Carolyn Carter on December 13, 1960, and together they owned T-Bill stables, home to champion Paint and Quarter Horse racehorses. Walter was the CEO and owner of Tandem Transport Corporation for 42 years.

Walter and Carolyn were heavily involved in Michigan horse racing, and Walter was the president and primary investor of Mount Pleasant Meadows Racetrack in Mount Pleasant, Michigan. Paul Jones to Appeal 60-Day Suspension

Quarter Horse trainer Paul Jones is appealing his 60-day suspension in New Mexico for a drug–related violation at Ruidoso Downs. On July 8, 2011, Jones was cited for traces of zilpaterol, a Class 3 drug intended for livestock muscle gain, in Jess Hi Maintenance (QH). Jones received his suspension and $1,500 fine on June 27. The nation's leading Quarter Horse trainer, Paul is a staunch activist against performance enhancing drugs in racing. He claims contaminated feed is to blame.

Prominent New Mexico Trainers Suspended

New Mexico-based Fred Danley, Chris Hartman and Alonso Orozco received suspensions and fines from the Racing Commission for horses testing positive for Clenbuterol. Danley received a six–month suspension, a $1,500 fine and lost Ruidoso Downs purse earnings won by Pakea Bay (QH) last summer. Hartman received a 90–day suspension, $1,000 fine and lost his earnings from Snow Ridge Bliss’ (QH) second-place finish at Sunland Park on March 2, 2012.

Orozco was given a 60–day suspension, $500 fine and faced the loss of purse provision. He is also the central suspect in an ongoing investigation of the death of Cartel Quick (QH) at the $750,000 Ruidoso Futurity.

Banned List to Include Two More Drugs

The Racing Medication and Testing Consortium advised the classification of Purple Paint and TB–500 as Class A prohibited medications on July 2. The advisory states the two products, which are sold through online pharmacies, should be treated as a prohibited practice under the new rules relating to drugs. Neither product is approved by the Food and Drug Administration.
