Publications

The American Paint Horse Association produces a number of award-winning magazines dedicated to the versatile American Paint Horse and the people who love them. These publications include the Paint Horse Journal, Paint Horse Connection and Paint Horse Racing.

• All three publications helped APHA celebrate its 50 th anniversary during 2012, producing a number of special historical articles as well as the commemorative February 2012 Paint Horse Journal. Included as part of the magazines’ 50 th anniversary coverage was “APHA Milestones,” an 11-part series by noted equine historian Frank Holmes; “Time Flies,” a timeline chronicling the association’s frst 50 years; and “The Next 50 Years,” a 10-part series examining how specifc issues might affect the horse industry in the future.

• Director of Advertising Jackie McGinnis helped increase sales fgures for eight issues during 2012— these included June, which saw a 26% increase over 2011; July, which had a 50% increase; and October, which had a 34% increase in sales. The October 2012 issue, for example, was 312 pages with 159 full-page advertisements, compared to 240 pages and 93 full-page advertisements in the October 2011 issue. The Journal’s average circulation for 2012 was approximately 10,400 with an estimated pass-along readership of more than 30,000.

• In September 2012, the Publications Department announced several staff changes. Jessica Hein was named editor of the Paint Horse Journal and Paint Horse Racing magazines. Formerly the managing editor, Jessica has been on the publications staff since 2006. Tonya Ratliff-Garrison retained the position of editor for Paint Horse Connection and was also named director of content innovation. Laura Stevens was named associate editor of editorial and promotional content. LaFonda Lynch also joined the team in October 2012 as advertising sales manager.

• The Paint Horse Journal Elite Team made its debut in Fall 2012, generating buzz throughout the horse industry. Comprised of world champion trainers who believe in the value generated by a constant presence in the Paint Horse Journal, the PHJ Elite Team was comprised of six top Paint-industry trainers, with plans to add additional representatives in 2013.
